How Homoeopathy works

Homoeopathy believes that there is a self-intelligent force that governs the harmonious functioning in health, known as vital force or vital energy. In the Hindu Vedas this energy is referred to as 'prana' (life force), which is known to flow through the different chakras (energy centers) of the body, maintaining the equilibrium.
In illness, this harmonious flow of the vital energy is disrupted. This disrupted energy expresses itself through mind (altered emotions, thoughts and feelings) as well as the body (altered sensations and functions). Hence what is seen as signs and symptoms due to affection of individual organs is not the disease, but a mere reflection of this deranged vital force.
Homoeopathic remedies are dynamic (immaterial) in nature and when administered on the basis of symptom similarity (similimum), correct the dynamically deranged vital force in disease, and restore the harmonious performance of all the vital functions i.e 'HEALTH'
  • Homoeopathy is Holistic

Health is not merely absence of disease but a sense of optimal well being that not only encompasses the body, but also emotions, thoughts and feelings. It is a state of being where there is an integral and harmonious performance of all the vital functions and a balance among mind, body and spirit. No organ, no tissue, no cell, no molecule, is independent of the activities of the others, but the life of the each one of these elements is merged into the life of the whole. The unit of human life cannot be the organ, the tissue, the cell, the molecule, the atom, but the whole organism, the whole man.
Therefore in Homoeopathy, every patient is considered not as parts but as an individual, as a 'whole'. It treats the 'MAN IN DISEASE AND NOT DISEASE IN MAN'
  • Similimum

Similimum is a remedy that is selected on the basis of symptom similarity in order to cure any given disease condition. In order to arrive at a similimum, a homoeopathic physician needs to understand every case in minutest detail and consider every person as an individual
  • Individualization

In Homoeopathy there is no medicine for any particular disease, but the medicine is for the person suffering from it. Hence two patients suffering from same illness may get different medicines, as they are two individuals with a different constitution (mental and physical make up.) Let us understand this with the help of an example: When two persons are suffering from headaches, the character of the pain, each one of them experiences is quite different. One may have a throbbing or bursting pain while the other may have a stitching pain, and each of them have a different state of mind and temperament. Although both of them have the same complaint the kind of pain and the temperament is very individualistic, characteristic to that individual only, and this forms the basis of choosing the remedy.
  • Case taking

Case taking is a process by which a Homoeopathic physician understands every little detail of the patient and then arrives at the Similimum. He takes into account all the physical ailments in detail as well as the personality of an individual, emotional state, previous history, life experiences, influence of environmental factors and related social factors.
The physician should be very observant, have immense patience and total freedom from prejudice while perceiving a case. This allows the true picture of the disease to emerge and enables the physician to arrive at the 'Similimum'.
